What is an LED?

Essentially, LEDs or light emitting diodes)are just light bulbs. But unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they do not have a filament which creates mainly heat and (to a small proportion) light. Making them particularly inefficient as a means of lighting. LEDs’ light on the other hand is created solely by the movement of electrons in semiconductor material (A semiconductor is made up of two parts – a positively charged component and a negatively charged component). The positive layer has openings for electrons; the negative layer has free electrons floating around in it. When an electric charge is applied to the semiconductor, it activates the flow of electrons from the negative layer through the openings of the positive layer which in turn creates the illumination.

Did you know – The lifespan of a high quality LED can be up to 25 times the lifespan of an incandescent lamp? So, it is not only the running cost which can be taken into account when comparing cost. The maintenance (or lack of it) is something which also needs to be considered!
